Spring Monitoring Update- Keeping our Promise of Permanent Property Protection
Each spring, as the Ozarks begin to green and early flowers start to bloom, the NWALT stewardship team heads into the field for one of our most important annual responsibilities: property monitoring. This essential stewardship practice ensures that every conservation easement and preserve under our care continues to thrive, protecting wildlife habitat, water quality, working lands, and the natural beauty our region depends on.
This year, Stewardship Coordinator Brittney Booth and Stewardship Intern Mabrie Baldwin have been hard at work, trekking the hills, hollers, fields, and forests that make our conservation lands unique. We are thrilled to share that together they have already completed about 80% of all required property monitoring for the year, covering over 6,300 acres across Northwest Arkansas.
“I feel grateful every time I step onto a property we’ve helped protect. Knowing these forests, farms, and waterways will always have a place in Northwest Arkansas — that’s what keeps me going. Monitoring is how we honor that commitment,” says Brittney.
Monitoring visits offer far more than a routine check. They give our stewardship team an opportunity to:
- Build relationships with landowners who partner with us in conservation
- Document seasonal changes and long-term ecological health
- Note any signs of erosion, invasive species, or management needs
- Ensure that each protected property continues to meet the conservation values it was entrusted to preserve
From sweeping views atop ridgelines to quiet moments beside spring-fed creeks, Brittney and Mabrie’s work brings them into direct contact with the landscapes we all work so hard to safeguard. Their observations help guide future management and restoration efforts, and their care ensures that these lands remain protected- forever.
As we move further into spring, the Land Trust will continue our monitoring progress, strengthening our commitment to lasting conservation. With over 9,600 acres under protection and growing, this annual stewardship tradition is one of the most meaningful ways we honor the trust placed in us by landowners and the community.
We are grateful to Brittney and Mabrie for their dedication, and to the many landowners who welcome them each year. Together, we are ensuring that our NWA heritage endures for generations.
