Join us as we explore Kessler Mountain and its cold-blooded inhabitants at this year’s Herp Hike! “Herp” is short for Herpetology, which is the study of reptiles and amphibians. Dr. J.D. Willson, Assistant Professor at the University of Arkansas J. William Fulbright College of Arts & Sciences, will be leading this hike through Kessler Mountain to hunt for frogs, salamanders, snakes, and turtles.

The Kessler Mountain Wildlife Regionis a priority conservation area for the land trust. From rare salamander species to the black bear, Greater Kessler Mountain Wildlife Region is a critical place for iconic Ozark wildlife to thrive. Many reptiles and amphibians can be found in this priority conservation area, including the spotted salamander (Ambystoma maculatum), ringed salamander (Ambystoma annulatum), and spring peeper (Pseudacris crucifer). Vernal pools, temporary ponds that form seasonally, provide important breeding habitat for many of these species. This family-friendly hike is a great opportunity to explore the mountain in search of these and other fascinating creatures.

Meet at Kessler Mountain Regional Park (parking lot closest to the trail head near the baseball fields) at 6:30 p.m. Headlamp or flashlight is required. Please be sure to wear hiking boots or sturdy footwear. Children under 10 are welcome, but must be supervised by an adult.
